Fueling the Flames: Exploring What Turns Wildfires Disastrous

In the Company of Stewards meetings hearken back to how a company of pioneers would circle their wagons for the night and gather together for uplifting and constructive conversation at the end of the long day. Join us as we learn from experts and everyday stewards about how they have personally integrated conservation and sustainability into their lives. This month we will be talking about wildfires with meteorologist Kerry Anderson.

The recent fire disasters in Los Angeles have highlighted the increasing frequency and severity of devastating wildfires in the region. Fires are a natural part of the California landscape due to the desert climate and the powerful Santa Ana winds that blow each fall and winter. While natural factors contribute to these disasters, human behavior plays a significant role in their intensity. This presentation will explore the issues that may be fueling larger and more destructive fires, such as building practices, the prevalence of nonnative plants, and the role of climate change.

Kerry Anderson lives in Southern California and is on watch each season for fires and has been evacuated multiple times. She is a meteorologist and works as a wind forecaster. In addition, she teaches courses in Meteorology and Natural Hazards and Disasters for Brigham Young University, Idaho and American Public University.
